How to Choose the Best Platform For Your Online Course

Jul 31, 2022

You have your course idea, your plan laid out, your content created and now your ready to get it all set up onto a platform. Woohoo!!

But wait.. this is overwhelming!

There are so many incredible online course platforms out there, each offering something a little bit different.

How do you ensure you pick the right one from the start?

It's important to do your research and figure out what you need out of a platform and choose one that best suits your needs.

Remember to think about not only where your business is now, but where you want it to be in the future and ensure that the platform that you choose (and other tech pieces) can support that!

The first step in deciding on a platform is to choose between an all-in-one or a course hosting platform only.

  • Do you have a website and funnels already in place and want to keep it that way?
  • What are you looking to accomplish with your course platform?
  • Is it more important to you that your course platform is easy to use, or more customizable?
  • Do you want to eventually offer more products or courses only?

All-in-One Platform (Kajabi, Kartra)

Kajabi is my top choice for course creators because it has everything you need in one place. Host your website, your courses, your products and even your podcast in this top of the line platform, while also using it to market, sell and distribute all of your products!

Kajabi now even offers a coaching feature that makes it easy to create a coaching offer with single or multiple sessions. Then you can schedule time with clients, share resources, track progress, and take notes on sessions, all from the same dashboard.

Kajabi is on the high-end in terms of cost, but if you plan on continuing to grow your business and your products, it will save you money in the long run.

Use if: you want to host your website, email marketing, courses and digital products all in one place either now or in the future.

Course Platform (Thinkific, Teachable)

Another great platform option but for those with much different needs. Thinkific is great for those who are specifically focused on adding courses into their business roster. The platform is intuitive and visually appealing and will give you everything you need to build and host a fantastic course.

Thinkific is not an all-in-one platform so you will need to host your website and email marketing system elsewhere

Use if: You are happy with your current website and email marketing systems and want a place to host your courses only.

After you have narrowed it down to the type of platform you want, my best advice is to take advantage of the free trials they offer because it's difficult to make the right decision based on comparison charts. It's all about personal preference!
